Lanchbery Bodhrans PDF Print E-mail
The traditional hand made bodhrans are individually produced by Doug Lanchbery in his new workspace at Burnbrae Studio, Main Street, Auchencairn. The robust tunable frames are made of the finest grade birch laminate and finished in 'natural birch' or 'slate blue'. The drum faces are from goatskin or from local home cured deerskin.

Doug started making bodhrans in the early 1980s. In those days they could only be tuned by the application of water (or Guinness) on the skin or held near a fire - such fond memories but such a waste of alcohol.

More recently as a member of Auchencairn Ceilidh Band and Two Left Feet Ceilidh Band he found the need for a tunable bodhran and as a result developed the current style. He uses tough synthetic blocks for the tuning mechanism. They are strong and light and are secured to the rim for holding the tuning screws and bear against metal plates fixed to the tuning rim. The goatskins or deerskins are available as thin, medium or thick, depending on your playing style and personal preference.
