ANSWERING THE CALL: AUCHENCAIRN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR

A hardback book with jacket sleeve, 256 pages, over 100 photographs (b&w and colour):
costing £15.00 (plus postage and packing)

The main focus of the book is the lives and fate of those who died; the eighteen men named on the village memorial and seventeen men with links to Auchencairn who are commemorated on memorials elsewhere.

'Sons of Galloway' is written and published by Stuart Wilson of Auchencairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. Stuart is a member of Auchencairn History Society which is supporting his project.

This book is a 'must' purchase for anyone with an interest in local history but particularly those who had relatives involved in the conflict.

The main focus of the book is the lives and fate of those who died; the eighteen men named on the village memorial and seventeen men with links to Auchencairn who are commemorated on memorials elsewhere. However, many stories tell of those wounded in action, while others relate the deeds of those recognised for gallantry in the field or meritorious service towards the war effort. In all, more than 150 men and women from Auchencairn served during WW1; a complete nominal roll details each person's connection to Auchencairn, along with a summary of their war service. The book is arranged by 'theatre of war', with each set of stories placed in context by an introduction summarising that particular period and area of the war.

The stories of those who served and returned include a knighthood for services on behalf of fellow prisoners of war, a Military Cross and Bar to a Tank Corps officer, one Distinguished Conduct Medal (KOSB) and three Military Medals - Glasgow Highlanders, HLI (with citation), Machine Gun Corps (with 29th Divisional certificate) and Royal Engineers. To pre-order this book and for more information about this local author, Auchencairn History Society Member and the project please get in touch via www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk
