Burnside House
Accommodation in Auchencairn - Bed and Breakfast

Location:

Auchencairn is a peaceful little village with lots of charm and many buildings dating back over 200 years.  It is easily accessed from Dumfries (30 minutes by car) via the A711 and is 7 miles from Dalbeattie, 8 miles from Castle Douglas and 14 miles from Kirkcudbright. Burnside House is centrally located in the village, overlooking the Square, with its ornate, Victorian Jubilee fountain. The village facilities include a pub, Post Office/Shop and a Garage that sells Autogas. Although we are on Main Street it is not the main route through this already quiet village.

Our home is very convenient for these local facilities and access to walks in the locality, which is designated as a National Scenic Area. Check out the walks on this site as there is bound to be one to suite your needs. The village is well situated as a base from which to explore our 'Scotland in Miniature' with its' hills and lochs and the mild weather in the 'Scottish Riviera' is great for those visits to the quiet sandy beaches.

The area offers many attractive activities.  We have two (free access) bird hides overlooking Balcary Bay (old haunt of smugglers) with its' large variety of birds including curlews, geese, shelducks and redshanks. The whole area is a birdwatchers paradise where buzzards and sparrow hawks abound and of course we are very close to the Red Kite Trail.

If fishing is your thing then all types of freshwater fishing is available. Those preferring sea fishing are well served along our coast with the well known rocks at Balcary Point being an attractive and we're told productive location (see the Activities Section on this site for further information). Our flexibility of breakfast times and provision of drying facilities will hopefully help you get the best out of your fishing visit.

If you are interested in arts and crafts then you will certainly be happy, for in addition to our local enterprises, we are close to the 'Artists Town' (and former County town) of Kirkcudbright with its' many galleries (mostly free) and a harbour that appears in many paintings.

Historical sites abound and vary from well preserved castles such as Caerlavrock, McLellands Castle and Threave Castle to ancient hill forts (check out Hugh Patons History of Auchencairn and the History Society pages on this site) - Galloway is a fascinating place.
